is a Fender Twin Reverb 1965 85 watt amp too loud for smaller gigs?
I play classic rock like guns n roses and some blues rock. If you have any suggestions on any tube amp that would fit my needs I would be very grateful.
Part of the sound from tube amps comes when you "drive" them a little. They all have a sweet spot where there is a little natural distortion/sustain from the tubes....maybe between 5 and 7 on the volume. If you simply turn down a powerful amp, you won't get the optimum tone. You'll still get a crisp clean sound at lower volumes, it just won't sing like it does at higher volume. I would think this amp has all the power you'd ever need, but might be a little big if you ONLY play small rooms. I've played in a country band with a guy that used a vintage Twin Reverb, and he does fine...so it's not the worst choice. BTW, have you tried to lift it? The first time I tried to help the guy load his gear, I thought it was bolted to the floor!
I have a 40 watt vintage Fender Super Reverb, which is all the amp I've ever needed. Remember, tube amps are a lot louder than solid state of equal watts. For awhile I lent it to a friend who played blues and rock...he wanted to buy it. It's also a monster to lug, but a sweet amp. Have you seen the Fender Deluxe Reverb VM series? It's 40 watts tube power with a DSP effect section. I've tried them in the stores and they're nice sounding.
