What's the difference between distortion and turbo-distortion?
If it's what i'm thinking of (Boss Distortion vs Boss Turbo Distortion) the difference is minimal. Same basic circuitry, in other words, same method of clipping, to the best of my knowledge. Just more gain. All that's really different is the name and a few component values.
I like the DS-1 a lot - it's very adaptable and can be used in a variety of different ways. I'd jam on both, of course, but keep in mind that you usually don't want to turn the gain above 50% anyways (otherwise it's a mess on just about any pedal).
If you are aiming for more of a metal sound, and your amp isn't doing it for you, then upgrade your amp or go for a different pedal. I really like the Boss Metal Zone - it can give a wide variety of sounds... well, a wide variety of metal sounds. =)
