Best way to overdrive a tube amp?
I got a re-issued Fender Bassman tube amp. Its a pretty good size. It doesn't have any dirty channels. But I heard if I tug the tubes out a bit and turn the amp up loud enough and get it hot enough it will overdrive. What is the safest way to overdrive my tube amp without using a pedal?
Do NOT pull your tubes out a bit - that is a Bad Idea!
On a tube amp without a master volume you have no alternative to simply cranking the volume.... unless, of course, you use pedals, modify the circuitry of your amp, change your tubes, or get an attenuator.
Um, don't modify your amps circuitry. Nevermind that I said that.
Change your tubes - what I mean by this is getting power converter sockets that let you put lower wattage tubes in your power tube sockets. Ruby and THD make 'em, for instance.... um, the THD versions are called Yellowjackets. The basic idea is that they lower your amps wattage, which means that you get more distortion at lower volumes.
An attenuator... this lowers the volume of what your amp puts out. The cool thing is that you can push your amp a little harder, so you get more distortion at lower volumes.
Finally, you can use a pedal to boost your signal. This can come in the form of an EQ pedal, an overdrive pedal like a Tubescreamer, a distortion pedal with the gain turned down low and the level turned up (Kurt Cobain and Randy Rhoads did this, btw), or something like active pickups or having a preamp built into your guitar to boost the signal there.
The safest way to push your tube amp is to use a pedal or high-output pickups, but this forms preamp distortion, and not power amp distortion, which is subtly different. The only way to get power amp distortion is to push your power tubes harder, and the only way to do that is to crank them..... so either crank lower-wattage power tubes or use an attenuator (I recommend the THD Hot Plate).
The whole point of doing this is that tubes get really bloody loud when you crank them. Using an attenuator and/or these lower wattage tubes (which aren't as quiet as I'm probably making them out to be, I've got a 5w tube amp that goes right through the walls in my condo) allows you to crank your tube amp and get that cranked sound at a volume that isn't louder than the drum set, blowing out windows, etc.
