Which override pedal should I get?
I'm looking for an overdrive pedal to buy to match with my new Vox AC30. I need something that will give me a good lead sound. I play country/rock music. I've looked at a few pedals like the ibanez override, or the boss override and a vox tube powered override. Which one of these, or other pedals would be affordable and a good pedal to buy?
(it's overdrive)
A tubescreamer! Really a classic pedal, if you get the right one, or a good clone. I've heard some are better than others - not all tubescreamers are created equal. Try before you buy! Don't feel like you have to spend hundreds to get the "magic" one, though - you can even buy one of the cheap ones and have it modded (or do it yourself, if you're handy!) and get that same sound for a fraction of the cost!
Other options include the Digitech Bad Monkey, the Boss SD-1, and the Voodoo Sparkle Overdrive. Not in that order, of course, I've heard so many good things about the Sparkle Overdrive I would say to try that next if you can find one.
The Proco Rat is a little gritty, but you might like that. Heck, you could even do it with an EQ pedal, with a bit of a mid and level boost.
Of course, I would be totally remiss if I didn't say a wah pedal - like the Dunlop Crybaby wah - the 535Q has a solo boost button, so you could set the Q really wide and the volume about the same and put that solo boost on, so when you click it on you get a bit of a wah but a lot of boost. It's definitely something to think about!
Again, this stuff is really a matter of personal taste - I would urge you to try out as many of these as possible, especially the sparkle overdrive, a tubescreamer clone, and a wah pedal.
Almost any distortion pedal can give you an interesting result, if it cleans up with low gain. Turn gain down real low, turn volume up. Maybe that will give you some different options - if you want a really clean, pristine, nice-sounding overdrive that may not be the way to go, but I want you to know that sometimes even a cheap distortion pedal can give you an interesting overdrive, as long as it cleans up when you roll back it's gain.... (so, umm, not the Boss MetalZone, for instance. grin!)
