--Question for experienced Guitarists--?
I am going to be buying some pedals eventually for help when I am gigging. I don't want any multi-effects pedals though. What are good pedals to get, and what would be considered essential pedals to have? I should mention that I am very much into psychedelic rock, and just most classic rock in general, specifically Grateful Dead, Cream, Jefferson Airplane... Here is what I was thinking so far...I dont have any makes or models in mind yet but as for effects, this is what I want, so far.
Compressor pedal
Tuner (pedal)
Wah pedal
Fuzz pedal
Tube screamer distortion pedal (Ibanez)
Phaser pedal
chorus pedal
What would be essential, and for the pedals I listed, what would be a good brand and model to buy for each? Thanks!
btw, the TS9 is from Ibanez, not Boss. =)
My experience has been that for clean effects, a multifx unit is one of the best ways to go - it's not easy lugging around six or seven pedals, and for a lot of the multifx units the clean sounds, ie modulation (chorus, phaser, etc), delay, 'verb, etc are decent enough to play with. Plus having an onboard tuner is a major bonus! I really don't like the distortion from multifx units, so there are some times when an analog pedal is really the only way to go.
Let me put it this way - I have a Boss GT-3 (100$ used). I have a tap-tempo that I can use to sync the pulse of my modulation (chorus or phaser, my two favorite fx) and my delay. Nice, I don't have to reset my delay pedal for every song, and I get the added bonus of the modulation sync-ing up to the beat. A small touch, but a nice one. I can use the expression pedal to add in a bit of delay or reverb when I want, and the GT-3 has decent amp models and clean boosts for when I want them. For the price and the relative simplicity, I don't think there is a better way to go.
The reason I've stopped using tons of separate fx is many-fold. One, I don't want to stomp on three or four different fx to change my tone - I want to focus on playing. A lot of what I do can be pretty complex from a timing perspective (progressive-ish rock and metal) especially, so I need to focus on that and having a good time, not on pedal stomping! Two, every pedal adds a power supply or need for another battery, an extra cable, and often a little bit of noise to the signal chain. I'm not a fan of either - each extra bit is another hit to the tone and another thing that can go wrong! I've forgotten batteries or had them die in the middle of a set, I've tripped over pedals and disconnected the leads (ha ha), had cables go bad, etc.
I want it simple, and I don't want a rig where lots of stuff can go wrong. For me, sooner or later, it does!
The fx I need to have pedals for are distortion and wah - really, no substitute for either, imho. I've traditionally used a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone for my distortion and a Dunlop 535Q for my wah, although I think I'm switching to the Boss Metalcore soon, it complements my tone better. Obviously, I'm into a little heavier stuff than you are, so your needs will be different!
If you still want to go all pedal, then here are my suggestions... Big ups on the Tubescreamer, but you may also want to check out the Voodoo Sparkledrive, I like it a lot as well. Has a little more modern voicing, but sometimes that's a good thing. I've mentioned the 535Q for wah, I like it because its very configurable - you can change all of the parameters, and dial in a solo boost as well. For you, I would suggest either a Vox wah or the normal Crybaby though, the sounds are a little more appropriate for your style.
Umm.... MXR makes a great phaser pedal, although the best model is the script logo Phase 90, and that's not made anymore. The new version is still decent, tho'. I love my Boss CE-1 (is that right? it's the chorus 1... CS-1?), it has a very pleasant chorus sound to me. A really nice choice is the H20 (forget the manufacturer, they sell it at Guitar Center). Gorgeous - has both chorus and echo built in, and it sounds heavenly.
For fuzz.... hmmm. Probably either the Swollen Pickle or Big Muff. I've heard good things about the first (though not played it), and I've always liked the Big Muff.
Boss makes a great chromatic tuner pedal, and I've heard their compressor/sustain is pretty good too, although I haven't personally used either (again, I rely on my multifx for those, and I don't use a compressor, if I use anything it's a limiter instead - more friendly to fast rhythms).
Ummm yeah, I think that's it. Consider the Jekyll/Hyde pedal, it's two distortions in one, one overdrive and one crunch. Good way to consolidate two distortion pedals into one, to keep the signal path a little simpler.
Psychedelic just screams delay to me... I am so hooked on tap-tempo that I would never go with anything else ever again... I would strongly suggest that you get a tap-tempo delay if you can, the ability to sync the delay to your tempo is really a good way to stay with the band and not be distracting by having delays that aren't in line with everyone else.
I think I've covered everything that you want, at this point. Can't think of anything I can add. I wouldn't go with anything Digitech, except possibly the Whammy for those Tom Morello-esque style sounds. Too modern-voiced or just crappy-sounding, to me.
I would totally get an EQ pedal. MXR makes a great 10-band, Boss has the GE-7. Even Danelectro makes a decent EQ pedal, believe it or not (I think it's called the Fish n Chips). EQ is a great way to customize your tone, subtly boost different frequencies, minimize or accentuate some warmth in your mids, and/or cut some of your highs to simulate some analog response (ie more of a round tone).
