what is the "super stereo effect" really called?
every now and then i'll hear a song and there'll be a passage where the stereo effect seems 3-D almost. i can really hear it with headphones. for instance, this effect is really noticeable on Xzibit's "Criminal Set" song in the very beginning. the part where ice cube raps is normal sounding, but the other rapper DEFINITELY sounds different.

I haven't heard the song... but usually if someone is interjecting something in the song and they want to put them in the background, they'll use a combination of panning, eq, different reverb settings, and stereo widening as per the link below.
Hard to say in that specific instance, since I don't know the song, but it seems likely its some form of studio magic.
