is this a good combo amp and pedal for punk music?
ok here is the lowdown:
- i have an american made fender stratocaster with a seymour duncan jb humbucker in the bridge position.
- i want to get a fender hot rod deluxe amp for my clean sounds
- i want to get a boss metal zone distortion pedal for my distortion sounds.
- i like to play music like green day, blink 182, the ramones, etc.
- i like the clean sounds from the hot rod deluxe and i love the distortion in the metal zone.
- would this be a good set up for punk music? oh ya i will be doing small gigs occasionally.
i will be using this set up mainly for jamming with friends, practices, etc
Steer away from the Fender Blues Deluxe and Blues Deville amps (both the Hot Rod and the Tweed Reissue). The circuit boards are known to fry and burn in the long run.
My advice, get a Fender Silverface amp from 1968 to 1983. If you'll be doing small gigs, I'd say no more than 50 watts (that is for the small clubs, 100 watts for the bigger venues).
The Fender amps I would recommend would be:
Deluxe Reverb: 22 watts (1x12)
Vibrolux Reverb: 35 to 40 watts (2x10)
Pro Reverb: 40 Watts: (2x12)
Super Reverb: 40 watts (4x10)
Or you can get a Marshall half staff or combo. Shoot for the original JCM 800 Master Volume series amps.
Back in the early days of Punk Rock, bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols and alot of other bands were basically playing guitars with Humbuckers. It didn't matter if the guitar was a Fender, Gibson, Epiphone, Mosrite, or whatever, as long as it had Humbuckers in it.
If you have like a Gibson SG Standard for an example, run that guitar straight into the amp since the guitar has humbuckers. Use the Neck pickup for clean and then just flip the toggle switch to the Bridge pickup for distortion. No distortion pedals needed.
As for the amp back then, it didn't matter on the amp as well, as long you got a distorted sound. But the first weapon of choice was the Marshall stacks (either the Super Leads or the Master Volumes).
For distortion: Anything one of these examples will do:
Fuzz: Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi
Distortion: MXR Distortion+, Pro Co Rat, Marshall Shreadmaster, Boss DS-1 Distortion, Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, Fulltone Distortion Pro.
Overdrive: Ibanez TubeScreamer, Chandler/Butler/Tube Works Tube Driver, Colorsound Overdriver, Fulltone Full-Drive 2, DOD Distortion/Overdrive 250, Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive
Since you got one humbucker in you guitar, I'd say slap another on in your neck pickup (if you want). If you get the Boss Metal Zone, get some mods performed on it through IndyGuitarist (check out Brian Wampler).
Look around E-bay or Craigslist for these amps and pedals.
