Can (Linux) Fedora run on an AMD based CPU?
I was going to download Linux Fedora 11. However, when I went to their website, I saw this next to the download button:
"690MB, ISO format, 1 CD-ROM disc image for Intel-compatible PCs (32-bit)"
So yeah, I have a 32bit based PC. However, will this work for an AMD CPU? I don't really get the point of them mentioning Intel if it works for everything anyway. (Yeah, I know Intel and AMD aren't the only CPUs out there)
Ubuntu, Mint, gOS always worked on my AMD processor. Why wouldn't Fedora?
YEs, it will work. Intel-compatible PCs means computers which have processors that use the intel based cpu instruction sets, namely the x86(32-bit) and x86-64(64-bit) instruction sets. Virtually all pc's use these instruction sets(only really old pc dont use this architecture e.g power pc's) So it will run.
BTW-to all intents and purposes intel and amd are the only companies that manufacture Cpu's for Computers.
Also, the Intel x86-64 instruction set was developed by AMD, not intel. Intel created an entirely new instruction set for 64-bit processing(IA-64 instruction set) but AMD extended the 32-bit instruction set. Obciously the x86-64 was more popular because thats the one used today.
