would it be practical to run a conventional petrol electric generator driven by cycle pedals?
Can anyone tell me if this is a feasable consideration? My theory is to power a generator by removing the engine and conecting pedals etc and using pedal power! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A normal person can produce 1 hp for a second, maybe a few seconds (For example, I'm a normal person. I weigh 190 pounds. I can climb a 10 ft staircase in 3 seconds. Thus I am gaining poetenial energy at a rate of 190 lbs * 3.3 ft/s = 633 lb ft/s = 1.15 hp). A highly conditioned athlete can produce 1 hp for a few minutes before collapsing in exhaustion.
If you do light cardio regularly, like pedaling a bike, a normal person can produce 1/4 to 1/2 hp for a half hour.
If you're somewhere in the middle of that range, you might be able to store 100 watt hours of energy during your work out.
So a human being is not going to turn the Generator head from a gas generator. Maybe a group of people. The best an individual can power is maybe a 20 or even a 30 amp alternator. But...
You can actually do a lot of stuff on 100 watt hours per day. You can run a 3 watt LED light bulb for 5 hours for light, charge your cell phone, electric razor, 6 AA batteries and your digital camera.
If you just have an awareness of how much energy you are using, you would see that you can supplement a meaningful chunk of it through a human powered generator.
The trick is to take full advantage of what the human body can produce, by utilizing as many muscle groups as you can. A recumbent cycle with arm attachments is a good way to do that. An elliptical machine is not bad either. A rowing machine also has some advantages, utilizing almost every muscle in the body, but there is a dead zone in between each stroke. You can try a rowing/bench press machine.
It's a good idea and yes it can make a meaningful amount of energy, especially since it would increase awareness of how much energy you use vs how much you produce, which would make people naturally gravitate towards efficiency.
BTW If 1/3 of the people in america did this, they could collectively produce ten thousand mega watt hours of energy per day. Enough to suppliment and entire small power plant of 400 mega watts.
To me that sounds like a meaningful amount. Maybe I'm just strange, but I believe that combined with the increased awareness and efficiency that would naturally bring, it would make a meaningful difference.
