What kind of guitar effects should I use?
I am currently reconstructing my guitar rig and am trying to decide weather to go the stompbox and pedalboard route, get a multi effects floor unit, or buy rack units with the a midi controller.
I like stompboxes, but they can get expensive and when I play live I don't want to have to tap-dance to get a decent sound. Rack units can also get expensive, and its a lot to lug around to band practice. A multi effects floor board would be nice. I want something with good tone, nice effects, and presets. I was looking at the Vox tonelab LE and also the Boss GT10.
My budget is around $400-$500. I am willing to buy used. I play anything from Avenged Sevenfold, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, christian rock, Nine Inch Nails... I play every style. I have a Line 6 Spyder II 112 amp.
I am open to all opinions and viewpoints. I'd appreciate your advice.
I found a Boss GT-3 used at a great price (100$). It's an older model, but it still works for me - for what I use it for, it sounds great!
First off, there's a big difference between multifx pedals. The Boss GT-x series appeals to me because they're so bloody configurable. Want to put delay before chorus? No problem. Distortion box after the preamp? No problem. Want to use the expression pedal to add some delay, change the gain, increase the echo, go from phaser to flanger, and kick in the anti-feedbacker... all at the same time? Yeah, no problem, once you learn how to use the controls. It's crazy... but good!
There are of course limitations. I only use my GT-3 for filtering, low-gain amp models, tuning, and clean effects (modulation ie chorus, delay, 'verb, etc).... like many multifx pedals, I hate its distortion sound. So I have a Boss Metal Zone for my distortion. Works fantastically! Basically, I use the GT-3 for what it sounds good at, and use pedals when I absolutely need a better sound. So I have a Dunlop 535Q for my wah and the Metal Zone for my distortion... everything else is from the GT-3.
I like the hybrid approach like this. Not as much tap-dancing, not as expensive, and I get a good compromise between portability, simplicity, ease of use, and decent tone.
Oh yeah, and if you take a few minutes to group the settings that you use together... then you don't have to hit multiple buttons and scroll between banks. Usually you get around four settings per bank... so put all the effects you use on a song in that bank. Makes sense, right?
So me, I'd take that 100$ and buy a GT-3, pay another 60-80$ or so for a used Metal Zone or Metalcore, and put the rest in my piggy bank and save up for a better amp. The biggest improvement you can do at this point for your tone is getting a better amp, beyond adding all of these fx I mean. Fx are like flavors... it doesn't do you any good to get some nice cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil if you're just going to use it to deep fry some french fries!
I've been playing through an Epiphone Valve Jr into a 2x12 cab.... and I must say, I'm impressed. One of the best tones for the dollar that I've ever owned. It's light, cheap, compact, and I get some great clean and crunch sounds with it... of course, it has no onboard fx, you need pedals for your sounds, but that's okay with me....
And yeah, I've done the rack mount thing. That lasted as long as it took for me to forget my MIDI pedal to a gig, and had to spend the whole thing switching channels by hand... ha ha ha....
