problem with Boss ML-2 played with drums ?
hi i got a Boss ML-2 metal core pedal.
It sounds great when i am playing it alone
However, when i am playing with my drummer, i just couldn't hear my tone clearly (not volume or amp problem, because i got a 50w tube amp, and thats loud enough; not pedal setting problem also, because i have already tried tons of different ways to set it).
It is okay to hear the the bass sound of my tone, due to the fact that the ML-2 can give a very great low-end sounding.
It would clearly be heard when i am playing the 6th string. However, on other strings, the sound just don't get clear and lts like a mess.
Unfortunately, most songs use chords on strings more than just the 6th string.
So, is there any way to improve that? I don't want my tone to be limited within the 6th string power chords only.
I have also been thinking if I should add an equalizer, so i wanna ask: would an equalizer pedal help?
Thank you very much for answering
Your Answer:
So to cut through a mix, there are a few steps that you can take. Try these things first *before* you buy anything else, okay?
First off, reduce your bass on the pedal itself, if you can. I've managed to completely space what the controls are, but I think it has either a bass knob or a tone knob. Tone should be past midway or bass should be below halfway (50%, before 12 o'clock, whatever). You should be boosting your mids on your amp, usually around 12 o'clock. Your treble should be very high, I usually have my treble around 75%. If you have a presence control, you want that at least at 50%.
Your bass has the power, your mids have volume, and your treble has the "information" that tells you what notes are being played... ie clarity. You want a balance... when you're playing in the mix you need less bass, since the power will come from the drums and bass, but you need more volume and clarity to cut through the mix. What sounds good solo does not necessarily sound good in the mix, and vice versa. Often a thin, anemic guitar tone ends up sounding thick and powerful when mixed in with the bass and drums, etc. It's funny, but that's how it works.
So up your treble, up your mids, lower your bass. Lower you gain a bit, as well, you don't want your pedal to be adding static or noise.
Another neat trick is to lower the bass side of your pickups (the side underneath your thick/lower strings) so that the pickups slant down from the treble side. This lowers your bass response, which will lower your pickups volume a little bit, but also lowers the mud factor - your notes will sound clearer and cut through the mix better. You can always try raising your pickups overall a bit, this can make up for the volume drop.
Since the Metalcore does cut your mids a bit, you want to make up for it by boosting them on your amp. This is important - too many players go for that uber scooped sound, and it really kills your volume. That means they turn their amps up, and end up emphasizing their bass and treble. The bass muds up with the drums and bass, robbing the mix of clarity and especially punch and thunder (drums = power) and messes with the vocals as well. Too much volume is bad!
You should be able to make it happen just by doing this. However, using EQ is a great tool for fine-tuning your sound... it's subtle, but very powerful. For instance - boosting your mids before distortion is a great way to get a thicker, fuller distorted tone. Dimebag would boost his mids before his distortion pedal, then cut them afterwards. This gave me a thicker tone, but still gave him a scooped metal sound. Since the Metalcore does this to a point already (although not as much as the Metal Zone - god I love that pedal) you can boost mids before the pedal (ie kinda like raising your pickups does), use the pedal to cut mids, then use the amp to boost mids enough to cut through the mix.
You can also do this with the amp itself, if it has an fx loop. Use the amp to boost mids heavily, then EQ in the fx loop to make heavy cuts in your lower mids especially - -3 to -6 db in the 400-800 hz region, maybe even more to taste.
EQ after distortion is more common - this can help reduce your bass and mud going into the amp (to keep the amp from going muddy/fuzzy or being too dark or being indistinct/unclear) and helps bring out note clarity. Cut low and boost high. Or the opposite direction, boosting to make up for an anemic low end, etc - although I would rather use the amp for that. Boosting mids into the amp to give more saturation, then cutting mids on the amp itself.... this is similar to raising the level on your pedal. Boosting a few db around 3 khz helps bring out the "attack" feel of the guitar, making it sound more present in the mix, for instance.
Raising the level of your pedal but keeping the master volume on the amp low helps saturate your amp and make those tubes sing... this is a common technique for tube amps, and has been used by everyone from Randy Rhoads to Kurt Cobain - an MXR Distortion+ and a Boss DS-1 (well, DS-2 I think, but who's counting?) respectively. Keep your gain relatively low, your tone around mid level, and your level high for doing this - it's a good way to help get that "cranked" tone at lower volumes.
I had more... ummm... try using different tubes, too. Some good JJ spiralwound preamp tubes can lower your noise factor quite a bit.
Dang - I had more, but Y!A truncated my answer. Bastards!
Good luck - email me if you want more tips/help....
