What kind of electric guitar pedal and I looking for?
I need something to sustain the harmonics I play in a song I'm writing that involves sweeping the top three strings during an open chord with my fret hand. It's not an arpeggio, just open harmonics. I wanted to know if there was type of pedal that I could invest in which would give these subtle tones more edge.
You want more sustain... so having a higher output from your guitar (hotter pickups, raising your pickups, installing an onboard preamp, diming your guitar's volume, etc) or having some kind of effect in your signal path would be the answer.
As far as having an effect, gain increases sustain, so an overdrive or distortion pedal will increase sustain by some amount. A compressor, properly set up, would also increase sustain and apparent volume. You could also use an EQ pedal set to boost the top frequencies (or a line boost overall) to achieve a similar effect.
