GUITAR QUESTION. why would someone use multiple analog pedals over a single multi-effects unit?
i don't really know that much about guitar equipment, but i assume it has to do with the sound maybe? or is there a delay with converting the sound through digital? i just bought a multi-effects pedal and i haven't had any trouble with delay, and it sounds way better than any pedals i've ever used. i'm just wondering why so many musicians have so many extra pedals, it seems sort of unnecessary to me. could it be that maybe some people just like the feel of good ol' regular distortion pedals? i don't know, it's drivin' me nuts!
I haven't experienced latency when playing through a multifx pedal... but I have experienced latency with some models when *switching* between channels. Oh, lord, that pisses me off...
If your multifx sounds better than any pedal you've ever played, then you've never played any decent pedals, I assure you. I have a Boss GT-3, which is a pretty decent multifx pedal, I think, and it works out pretty well, but even the newest GT-10 etc doesn't *quite* match up to the genuine article imho. And that's just talking about clean effects, there's no way in hell that any multifx pedal I've ever heard matches the sound of a real guitar amp, or even a decent distortion pedal.
I do use my GT-3 for my clean fx, ie chorus, flange, delay, 'verb, etc. The fact that it has a built-in tuner is probably the most useful part about it, though. The noise gate is kinda nice, too, although the best way to avoid noise is to not have any in the first place - a properly grounded and shielded guitar, not using too much gain, etc.
But I loathe the distortion. Compared side by side, it doesn't compare to my favorite distortion pedals - Boss Metal Zone, Boss Metalcore, etc. I just got a Seymour Duncan Tweakfuzz, which is an uber-beautiful fuzz pedal, and it can't even touch that either.
Just like the distortion, most multifx units can approximate the sound of an analog effect, more or less, and the decision is whether to have a pedalboard full of pedals and better tone or to have the simplicity and convenience of a multifx pedal. I strike a midpoint between the two - I use pedals for the times when I absolutely refuse to sacrifice my tone (distortion, wah mostly), and multifx for everything else (chorus, clean boost, 'verb, etc).
All that said, I sound noticeably better when the multifx pedal isn't in my signal chain at all. I do go through a tube preamp, though, and that helps sweeten it up a bit. That has to do with the digital to analog converters... cheap converters (as is found in many lower priced multifx units) will degrade the tone significantly. Some units (I'm thinking of Zoom and Digitech!) can be extremely noisy, which is a huge turn-off for me (I do everything I can to avoid noise).
If you can't tell the difference between multifx and the real pedal... well, quite honestly, I'm happy for you. I can, and sometimes it bothers me, sometimes I don't care. In fact, it's difficult for me to believe that you can't, the difference is that profound. It's entirely possible that you're using a practice amp or something like that, though - if you aren't playing through a 12" speaker and either a solid-state amp with at least 30 watts or a tube amp, you probably won't notice the difference, for instance.
The interactions between pedals can also make a huge difference. You can't (or can't buy) a multifx pedal that models how my old DOD chorus pedals gets overdriven and spazzes out when I put it after a wah pedal, for instance.... it completely changes its sound in a very unique way.
You also can't tweak a multifx pedal the way you can tweak an analog pedal... not just parameter wise (I used to own an old Pearl chorus pedal that had like six different knobs on it.... how many parameters does your multifx chorus have on it?), but circuit-wise as well. There's a mod I can do to the Tweakfuzz that will boost its volume (by raising its headroom), for instance. Can't do that with a multifx unit. Since its basically a glorified Fuzz Face, I have a whole topology I can mess with, including adding diodes, changing transistors, altering resistor/capacitor values, changing supply voltages, etc etc.
The tradeoff is potentially far superior tune, far more versatility and flexibility in terms of what is possible tone-wise with analog effects... versus the convenience and relative ease of use of digital.
Digital has an unprecedented ability to alter signal chains on the fly, which is something I love doing with the GT-3. Maybe I want my chorus before my delay on preset 1, but want it after my delay on preset 2. I can do that. Not so easy with stompboxes. Oh, no no no!
As I said, it's all about convenience and simplicity vs potentially much higher quality tone.
