what is the difference between overdrive and distortion on the guitar?
I'd like a full, scientific answer please
They're both pretty much the same. Their goal is to increase the gain past the input capacity of the amp so that it will, well, distort the signal. Distortion pedals just seem to increase the gain more than overdrive pedals for a harsher sound. If you listen to a solo by a blues guitarist like BB King and then a solo by a metal guitarist like Rusty Cooley you'd hear the difference.
