guitar Question distortion and wah
ok im buying a wah wah pedal. im thinking a original crybaby. i have distortion on the amp which i use. if i get the wah wah do i need a separate pedal for distortion, or can i still use the amps distortion?
i have a peavey, crate, and fender amp, and a ibanez and fender guitar.

also im going for a metallica-ish sound, any suggestions on a good wah wah pedal other than the crybaby?
The cry-baby is fine for 80's-style metal; but when buying a wah, you HAVE to try it out for yourself, don't just buy one online.
You're looking to see if there's any "dead" space in the pedal's movement, where moving the pedal a little doesn't make any difference. Some optical wahs are very sensitive in the middle, and less sensitive at the extremes. Some of the classic wahs are more sensitive in one extreme pedal position. Get one that YOU can easily get that distinctive wah sound out of, because people's natural techniques differ - some stamp, some lean over the pedal, some people rest on the heel, etc. All wahs have a slightly different voice and character too, and it's up to you to decide which sound you like best.
As for distortion, most people set their wah up ahead of the other effects in a chain, so you can keep on using your amp distortion. however, almost all other "wet" effects (like echo/reverb/delay/flanger) will need to be later in line, you should put these through the "effect send/return" on your amp, or buy a distortion pedal. Your local guitar store geek will be happy to talk you through all this.
