What distortion pedal should i get?
I want a nice pedal that i wont ever replace. I plan on using it in gigs and whatnot. I already own a Digitech Rp90 effects pedal. I bought it to kinda experiment with different types of pedals to see what i need. My goal is to set up a nice pedal board. So because im still quite young, im slowing getting the pedals I want/need. I have many pedals in mind but im not sure what sounds the best and that will last. Oh yeah I play death metal/deathcore. So here goes my list-
- Digitech Death Metal
- Digitech Grunge (Everyone says it has more distortion than the Death Metal)
- Boss Metal Core
- Boss Metal Zone
- Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff
- MXR Dime Distortion
If you think theres a better pedal recommend it!
The Boss Metal Zone is one of the most versatile distortion pedals on the market - but it does have a basic tone to it that is very reminiscent of 80's metal. So if you want to get a tone that sounds like any type of metal you would have heard in the 80's (not power, but thrash, death, speed, black, etc) then the Metal Zone is a great pedal for you. The Metal Zone doesn't have a lot of low end, it is a little brighter overall - so its great for leads/soloing and lead guitars.
I also have the Boss Metal Core, and while it is somewhat similar in tone, it has more lower mids and low end, so it is more suited for modern metal, in my opinion - more chug. The EQ controls aren't as cool, but are on par with any other pedal, I think.
In general I avoid Digitech products whenever I can - I have not been impressed with their quality or tone.
I don't have any personal experience with the EH Metal Muff, but the only time I've seen it live the guitarist was very trebly and thin. I honestly cannot say whether this was an amp setting, poor mixing, bad pedal settings, just the guitarist being retarded, etc.
No experience with that particular MXR pedal.
I have some experience with Danelectro... in general I have found that they are somewhat limited in scope - they have a basic tone, and if you like it, cool, if you don't like it, try a different pedal, cuz you ain't gonna get anything else out of 'em!
I think that the biggest investment you can make is in an EQ pedal. Put the pedal after your distortion and you can sculpt and tweak to your heart's content. Gain in and of itself means nothing - its all about how the signal is EQ'd before, in-between, and after the gain stages that makes the differences between different high-gain pedals.
It bears noting that I once owned a Danelectro Fab Tone, which is a vintage-y sounding fuzz... using a Boss GE-7 I actually managed to sculpt out a pretty decent Metal Zone-ish tone!
If you want to buy a pedal you will never want to replace, then you need to play as many as possible before you *do* buy.
The biggest upgrades in quality will come from a better amp, better speakers, better pickups, and proper EQ, so don't buy pedal after pedal after pedal looking for the perfect tone - look at your whole signal chain, not just the pedal.
I think that the EH tube pedals have the potential to be really great sounding, but unfortunately I have no personal experience with those either.
I tend to prefer distortion from the amp anyways, when I can get it.....
Saul
