What exactly does a guitar processor do?

I am looking for a guitar processor, such as this one from Digitech: http://www.guitarcenter.com/DigiTech-RP150-Modeling-Guitar-Processor-103952115-i1169083.gc

Guitar signal goes in, digital chip does math on it, guitar signal goes out with effects added on to it - anything from chorus to flange to delay to amp simulation to distortion to wah, etc etc.

They all have an on and off function, though it varies from pedal to pedal.

Multifx pedals vary in quality, function, application, and of course ease of programming. Digitech is probably one of the easier ones, but I personally feel that their quality is one of the lowest, versus Line 6 and Boss being some of the better sounding and more complicated to program.

In a very general sense multifx pedals usually give decent clean sounds, digital-sounding distortion (usually not that good), and moderately acceptable modulation effects, depending on the unit. Line 6's wah is better than most of the others, but I personally prefer Boss's distortion.

It's all kind've a give and take - if this is your first pedal, get what you can afford, but next time save up and research a couple different pedals... you'll have a better idea what you want and expect from a multifx pedal.

And ... they all sound better through a tube amp. =)
