Guitar Modeler powering a Cabinet Amp?
I have a POD 2.0 Guitar Modeler with a small amp and I am planning to upgrade. I really don't want to buy a combo amp because that basically defeats the purpose of my POD 2.0 because it has the same effects as it. Also because that would be a waste of $200 for the POD 2.0.
So I was wondering, can my POD 2.0 just power a Cabinet itself instead of needing a power amp's emulated line out or instead of having to buy a head?
On the website it says this about their product:
"Other tuning modes allow POD to be optimized for connection to the power amp input of a closed-back system, or into closed-back cabinets. "
Well... the purpose of a combo amp is not solely to add effects; it's mostly to power the cabinet. To be honest, I really think you should reconsider a combo amp. I don't agree that it defeats the purpose. I have two combo tube amps (a Hughes & Kettner 112 and a Fender DeVille 410) and use a pedal board on one and a GNX4 processor on the other.
Since you can turn the effects off altogether on the "head" portion of a combo, then you can run the POD in unaffected, right? What you're really paying for in the combo is the amplifier, at least on a quality pro-level amp. The built in effects are, at least in my opinion, usually mostly a gimmick. The only effects of value on a combo amp are the reverb and the EQ knobs (low-mid-high.) Other than that, I just use the clean channel and get my effects from my boards.
I don't think the POD has an amplifier built into it, so you would not be able to run it directly to the cabinet anyway. Your excerpt above is a bit confusing. I'm with them on the closed-back system part, but closed-back cabinet seems to imply you can run it directly into an un-amplified cabinet. I seriously doubt that's the case.
You know, Guitar Center sells these things. You might just call them and pretend like you want to buy one, and pose your question to the sales guy. Lotsa schmucks there, but often they do know what they're talking about.
