Metal muff pedal is stuffed?

i just bought the electro harmonix metal muff pedal with top boost and i started playin with it and thought it was great. then when i went to play it an hour later to show a friend it wasnt working. there was pretty much no distortion and just a horrible screeching noise and i run it off a 9v power supply so theres no way its the battery. any ideas on what it is or how it fucked up? if not i will be taking it straight back to the shop and they can sought it out.
