Thrash metal, like any other musical movement, was about rebellion and freedom. It came along in the 80s, when glam rock and pop were gaining popularity, so the angry misguided youths of the time adopted it as their national anthem. If anything, it opened many eyes at the time, exposing people to fast music and passionate lyrics. Glam songs were about sex and drugs and superficial things, but thrash commonly transcended that into themes about the reality of war, freedom of expression, introspection, etc (especially since at the time the government was cracking down on civil liberties and censorship, and the Cold War was at its boiling point)
