Bass guitar as a lead instrument?
Okay, I used to play bass very conservatively, you know, just playing the root note of the guitar chord over and over, usually in eighth notes. Dee Dee Ramone style.
But recently, I plugged my bass up with a fuzz petal, and used it to make space sounds with all the insane feedback (it's a hollowbody).
The fact that you can do the same thing Jimi Hendrix did on the intro to "Wild Thing" inspired me to play bass like I would play lead guitar.
But anyway, do you think the bass can be used well as a lead instrument? Like a band with just bass and drums?
Are there any solo bassists?
you should listen to death from above 1979. it's a band with just a bassist/vocalist and a drummer. it's really unique sounding and the bass player does a bunch of distortion and effects on it too.
as for the "solo bassist" question...there's a bass player named victor wooten. he isn't necessarily 'solo' (he plays with a backing band) but there's a video of him on youtube where he plays 'amazing grace' completely on his bass. it's insane how talented he is.
