1. David Copperfield by charles dickens
2. The mill on the floss by george eliot
3. Dr jekyll and Mr hyde by robert louis stevenson

5. The merchants of Venice by William Shakespear

Dr. and Mr. is good because it's short, well-written, and is a classic study in false outer self and nasty inner childishness (the inner child, which is the soul, is not really considered by Stevenson; however, C. S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce," about 120 pages, does an excellent job, and is perhaps less scary and more joyful).
If you like Dickens' style, DC is liked.
If you can read and follow Shakespeare, "Merchants of Venice" is probably the best choice of all.
