What are the "Send/Receive" ports on my guitar effects processor and amp for and how are...?
...they used?
I have an effects processor which has a port for Send and Receive. My buddy brought over an amp and his amp also has a send receive port.
From what I understand, this is a cleaner way to put effects on your guitar, as your not sending a long string of effects to the amp, you're allowing the amp to blend in your guitar through the line in and the effects separately.
How are these ports used, I haven't been able to get them to work?
Why is it beneficial to configure your setup this way?
How would I incorporate pedal boxes to my setup? Would I string them in the send/receive loop?
Thanks for addressing each question!
you probably wouldn't set up your pedal boxes through the sends, I can't think of a good reason to do this. You are pretty much correct in yer assessment of the blending or what not but isn't quite that clear cut.
The sends are there in order to insert a device in the middle of the signal flow of the amp or effects processor, your pedals are smack in the beginning of the signal process right after your guitar and before your amp. Where in the signal flow the sends are depends on the amp and you would have to look at the schematic in the manual to see "where" the sends are located. They could be before and after the actual preamps in the box, right before the signal goes to the speaker etc.
Things you would put in the send, receive ports: Compressors, limiters, graphic EQ etc. the kind of boxes that you want more or less to ALWAYS be on when yer using yer rig. These things will only have switches to control with your hands that won't be ready to adjust while you're playing like a pedal is. These boxes will be rack-mountable units that are much bigger then pedals and aren't too safe to just keep on the ground necessarily.
there are so many kinds of these boxes, so its hard to decide to get specific on what each do and why you would want to do it. Let me just say that these are the kinds of pieces of gear that are usually used attached to a recording/board at a recording studio and if a guitarist has an idea of how to improve his amp sound using one of these technologies, he'll then use it. Sometimes one would have to be REALLY persnickety about his/her sound in order to want something like a graphic eq. Of course there's already a much simpler eq on all amps. One might use a compressor or a gate/limiter to control the consistency of volume or to avoid excess noise, even though you have simple volume knobs on yer guitar and amp. You'd have to look up each piece of gear separately to figure out how and what it would do to your sound. You might look at other players rigs and see what they use and try to find out how, look up stuff in guitar player magazine or whatever there is these days. You should only need these items and the use of the send port if you are dissatisfied with your amp sound in some very specific way. The point is anything that you do use in this area gives you more detailed control over your sound and probably would make it more consistent if you know what you're doing.
As for not getting them to work this depends on a few things. Is there only 1 - 1/4 inch jack that is both send and receive? If this is the case then you need a Y cable that will bring signal to the device and then back.. meaning that the two side of the why would be one going in the in and out coming out the out. This has something to do with TRS stuff with cables.
hope this helps. feel free to ask some follow up questions as it is kind of complex and sometimes its hard to tell without knowing what the specific piece of gear is.
