Do BOSS pedals sounds digitally in high volumes?
Hi, i have always used MXR pedals which are analog but I want to try out something new, I was about to purchase three of Boss's pedals which involve the CE-5 Chorus Ensemble, GE-7 Graphic Equalizer, and the ML-2. I have not experimented with Boss pedals before, but in your point of view do Boss stompboxes start sounding digital at high volumes, I have always been a analog MXR user with pedals like the Phase 90, Flanger, and Fullbore Metal. I will be running the chain through a Peavey Valveking hooked up to a Shure wireless reciever and a Marshall 1960A cab.
or should I go with the MXR Stereo Chorus, MXR Flanger (EVH Sig), MXR ten band EQ??? i want something of good quality...PLEASE DO NOT suggest different brands like digitech or line 6
In my experience, MXR is a better brand. Boss effects aren't going to sound digital at only loud volumes... they might sound that way at low volumes as well. Every now and then, there are some pedals from Boss that are worth having. One is the older 80's Flangers made in Japan I believe. But really, some are hit and misses. For example, the CS-3 compressor/sustainer doesn't have as good of reviews as the previous model, the CS-2.
The Chorus pedal, I'm not sure about. The older CE-2 wasn't that good, but you can have it modded by Keeley, which would turn it into a really good chorus. I don't know if they have changed anything on them to make them better. I have a Keeley mod on my Boss Tremolo TR-2 and it cleaned up the tone and corrected the volume drop.
For an EQ, I recommend sticking with the MXR and getting the 10 band EQ from them. It's pretty much an industry standard and is a lot better than the Boss.
The Metal Core is going to sound digital. You can compare this to the MXR Fullbore metal, which I had and was terrible as well. Put on a nice tube amp, and these pedals sound terrible. I recommend checking out this pedal with your guitar and amp first, before buying. Ask Guitar Center to test it out.
Robert Keeley does wonderful mods on pedals, especially on crappy boss pedals. One thing, is that a lot of Boss pedals have crappy buffers in them, so if you're going to plug your guitar into a ton of pedals, say more than 3 at one time, then you'll probably wanna go with pedals that have true bypass, or pedals that have better buffers in them.

If you have pedals that aren't great quality, or have crappy buffers in them, and you don't want to modify them to true bypass, then it's wise to get a True-Bypass Looper.

-- Checkout this company. I bought a mini-looper to throw in a couple pedals that I rarely use, so I can get them out of my signal chain when they are turned off.
So, yeah, I'd recommend the MXR 10 band EQ for sure, then test out the rest of the pedals and see if you like them.
For a Flanger, I really like my BF-2 from Boss, but it's an older 80's model... if you can find one, it's worth it, but again, you'll want to use a true-bypass looper if you're going to use a lot of effects. To me, this flanger is a classic sound, like what you would here from Hendrix.
