EMG vs Duncan in the LTD EC-1000?
I'm debating whether to buy the Seymour Duncan version of the EC-1000 or the EMG version. I already have an American Strat HSS, a Schecter C-1 elite with Dimarzios, and an Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Sport. I play a variety of music from Killswitch Engage , RHCP, Butthole Surfers, All that Remains, Muse, Alice in Chains, - i.e. 90's grunge, Nu- and old Metal, Rock, etc.
The question is - to compliment the other guitars I have, would I be better off getting the EMG version because I lack a guitar with a lot of bite? Would the Duncan version just be a repeat of what I already have available to play rock and blues etc? I want something that will add to my ability to play different stuff with out it being really bad on tone (like I've been warned about EMG's being really sterile).
Thank you ahead of time
PS I'm playing through an Engl Powerball and a H&K Triamp with a myriad of pedals to color my tone if needed.
Yup, I can't stand EMG's. I had some in a ESP/LTD ec-500s. That guitar sucked. The EC series guitars are not that great. Mine fell apart in different areas, the hardware tarnished and it just didn't feel good playing it... and that was only having it for 3 months. The other ESP's are supposedly really good though.
EMG's are lifeless and dull. You have to try them yourself.
What Dimarzio's do you have? I have a Schecter C-1 exotic which they don't make anymore and I put a Tone zone in the bridge, and I really like the sound I get. It's a high output pickup, but isn't to the point where its over the top, because at a certain point, you start to lose tone in certain areas. The Tone Zone had clarity like this PRS pickup that I just sold called a 57/08, except it was high output, making it sound like the PRS on steroids. I ended up selling the PRS pickups for $500.
The only EMG's I like, are the ones for Fender strats, the David Gilmour setup. Those are cool. They're still a little dull, but I love the David Gilmour sound, and being single coil pickups, the sound works real well, but I would like to get another Strat to have that classic strat sound, or maybe get some Lace Sensors installed.
NOW, onto the Seymour Duncans. Which ones do they put in there? Lemme guess, JB/59 combo, right? I could be wrong, but if I had to bet, I'd imagine that's what they have installed. I had this setup for years in my other Schecter C-1+. I thought they were good pickups, but the Dimarzio's are better. The JB pickup is a jack of all trades pickup. It's good for many styles of music, but not great for pinpointing your a specific sound, or creating your own sound... which is why so many guitars have those pre-installed already, to appeal to a wide range of players.
I don't recommend the EC series guitar at all. Some guys REALLY like EMG's, but you have to play them with your setup, and possibly try a guitar with the Seymour Duncan Blackout pickups. Those are supposedly awesome pickups, but I haven't tried them yet. The Blackout pickups will easily install and replace the EMG's, so if you like the Blackouts, get a guitar with EMG's, and if you don't like that lifeless, dull tone, then look into the Blackouts. Or, checkout other guitars with EMG's. It may be that the EC series just doesn't sound good with them.
Some other pickups to checkout are: the SD Blackouts, Dimarzio Super Distortion, Super 3 or their highest output gain pickup (the X2N), or the new Liquifire
In other words, buy a guitar you like and swap out for better pickups.
You're to the point where stock pickups that are meant to appeal to a wide variety of players, just won't suit your styles and tastes. It sounds like you're like me, where you like playing different styles and genres, and you know that it's best to just have different axes on hand to change up your sound, instead of searching for some "magical" pickup that plays every style perfectly.
