Should i use my effects loop with my pedal board?
Well basically I play metal. Mudvayne, Deftones. Metal. Yeah. What i want to know is, if i use only 2 effects and the rest are gain effects is it really worth the hassle of setting up with 3 cables running to my board or is it worth keeping them going right into the front of the amp?
Well, I find myself disagreeing with Shelby again.
There are many factors to consider when you look at how to set your rig up. For me, if you're talking about gigging, then the maxim is and must always be Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS)!
I've found time and time again that when I put a rig together and have the signal path just *so* and I can do all this stuff with it and it sounds so good... that the more components involved, the more pedals, the more cables, the more batteries/power supplies, the exponentially more likely it is for something to go wrong.
So, I've learned to keep it as absolutely simple as possible.
Have I used pedals in the fx loop? Yes.
Honestly, though, at the venues I've played, I haven't heard a huge difference between the two - enough that I find its simply easier to put my pedals in front of the amp and leave it at that.
For playing in bars and taverns and small clubs, the house wants you set up and broken down fast - they don't want a lot of down-time between sets. So having a simple setup is a bonus there, too.
As far as what Shelby specifically said in terms of signal chain... well, I disagree.
The best place for EQ, for instance, is *after* your distortion.
Quickly, the role of EQ *before* distortion is controlling how the pedal is saturated - the role of EQ *after* distortion is shaping how the pedal is voiced.
To have a nice tight crunch with lots of clarity you want lots of mids and not much bass before the pedal, for instance. Many players cut mids every chance they get - mistake! It weakens their tone. Now, you can do this with an EQ pedal, sure, but you can also achieve it by doing things like lowering the bass side of your pickup (the side under the thick strings). This lessens the bass response coming out of your guitar, but will actually give you more headroom (ie more clarity, tighter crunch). If you need more bass after the pedal, then use EQ there - ie, on your amp, for instance.
What I'm trying to say is that EQ is always important, but if you only have 1 EQ pedal, put it after your distortion. This will give you the greater amount of control over how it sounds - and besides, you have options for altering the tone before the pedal, as I've just mentioned (ie pickup height).
If you were using your amp's distortion, the same idea can apply. Depending on how the amp is configured, you go one of two ways... if your amp has no fx loop, the pedal goes in front of the amp and cuts highs and lows (in other words, a frowny face EQ with a level boost), while the amp's EQ controls cut mids and boost bass and treble as needed. If your amp has an fx loop, usually its the other way around - turn the mids on your amp up, turn the bass and treble down a bit, then use the EQ pedal to cut mids (ie smiley-face EQ, no level boost though, gain in the fx loop usually isn't a good thing).
Um, yeah. If you want to talk tone, feel free to msg me.
