need help getting good tone?
i have a line6 spider 3 75 w amp, bcrich warlock nj series, and a jekyll and hyde overdrive/distortion pedal. i really try to get a good metal tone but i always end up messing up my tone by turning the knobs to try to improve my tone. it really drives me crazy.... i could sure use some help to get a good metal tone similar to the one in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOj4v1PYXkQ. i like to play trivium, iron maiden, all that reamains so i really want to get the best tone possible using my available gear. thanks in advance ![]()
this is the link srry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOj4v1PYXkQ
Hoo boy, tall order.
Alright, so first off, the video has a guy playing a 7-string. You won't get a comparable sound with a 6-string unless you're tuning down and have pretty decent tension - ie a heavier gauge so your strings aren't all floppy. Floppy strings = weak tone. I play Drop C# (drop D down 1/2 step) and I use 11's... gives me a nice strong tension to work with. Bends are a little difficult I suppose, but it stays in tune better, has more sustain, and a thicker tone.
So if you aren't already using thicker strings (10's or bigger) and tuning down, that would be one step.
Another step is to get the hottest sound you can from your guitar into the amp. Ideally you would want to get better pickups... but I would try using the jekyll/hyde as a booster pedal and see how that worked. Another thing to look at is your pickup height.... raising your pickups closer to the strings will raise their output a little bit... but you will need to have the treble side (the side under the thing strings) higher than the bass side (the side under the thick strings). Raise your pickups keeping that in mind and see if it sounds any better.
Anyways, the pedal... in overdrive mode, with low gain and high level. Set the tone controls at halfway, I suppose, but if anything leaning towards the treble. Bass boost *off*, and probably want it sharp vs blunt.
Now you've got a nice hot signal hitting the amp. The hardest part is dialing in your amp, to me, since I loathe Line 6 with a passion that is rivaled by only my loathing for ... well, words escape me. No matter.
Do not use the Insane channel. Ever. One of the maxims of crafting good guitar tone is that whenever you add gain to your tone you add compression and sustain, sure, but you also add noise, reduce your dynamic range, and reduce the force of your fundamental by adding more and more overtones. So you only want to use as much gain as you need.
So I would try either the Metal Green with the mid at halfway, or metal red. Since you already have a nice hot signal, you shouldn't need as much gain to get that saturated thick distortion sound. A good rule of thumb - never put your gain over 75% on any pedal or amp. After 75% you aren't adding anything but noise. True for every pedal or amp I've ever used.
Next is limiting your bass before distortion. This is a clarity issue - too much bass going into a distortion pedal or dirty channel creates fuzz, intermodulation distortion, farty noises, all sorts of ick. So by doing things like lowering the bass side of your pickups and skewing your tone to the trebler side of things (and not using the bass boost) you deliver a nice hot signal to your amp that isn't going to drive it into farty saturation. By doing this you can use the bass EQ on your amp as more of a "warmth" control... and you should also get a lot more clarity and note definition in the end, as well.
Don't cut all of your mids. Mids = volume, and by cutting mids you lose volume. So a little bit is okay, but too much is bad. In a band context or when recording you only want to cut as much mids as you absolutely have to (like gain).
I tend to prefer amp distortion to pedal distortion when I can get it, and in this case since you don't have high output pickups (I'm assuming they're stock, right?) it seems like the way I've suggested is the most reasonable way to get to a high gain crunch.
I have to say that I've owned a BC Rich Warlock (Platinum), and I grew to loathe it. I even put EMGs in it, and still hated it. Selling it was the best thing I ever did. Got a Jackson... now I play LTD... lovin' every second, especially with aftermarket pickups....
Hope this helped! Good luck!
