What is the difference between a distortion and the overdrive of an electric guitar?
Just curious.
Well, loosely speaking, 'overdrive' means trying to sound like the powersection of a tube amp is overdriven - too much voltage going in and hence the sound is overdriven. Overdrive was used a lot with classic rock songs. They would simply turn up their amps until the power sections of their amps distorted, and that is called 'overdrive'.
The 'distortion' is the distortion of usually the preamp section, usually distorted a great deal. It usually means feeding the output of a preamp stage back into the input. When amps gained master volumes, people cranked up the input to get distortion at low vollumes. However, this kind of distortion is not as good as powersection distortion or overdrive, for a variety of reasons.
VOX amps use a tube that both can overdrive a small power amp tube and distort the preamp. They call that 'valve reactor' technology. Whoopie for them.
Anyway, that is the history of the terms.
Today, it has become sort of a mess since people have modified preamp distortion so it sounds just as good as power amp distortion, and the terms can be used interchangeably. Most metal is distortion, much blues is overdrive.
