Where do I place an MXR Dyna Comp compressor guitar pedal in my pedal set up?
What should and shouldn't go before this in my pedal order?
I have all the usual suspects - distortion, fuzz, reverb, delay, tremelo, etc....
In general,
guitar -> buffer/compressor/tuner -> distortion -> pitch-based, ie modulation (chorus, flange, etc) -> time-based ie delay, reverb -> EQ/filter/wah -> amp
There is more than one right answer, though, and it largely depends on how you use your compressor. Personally, I see two valid places to use it - 1, at the beginning of your signal chain so you can get a nice fat dependable clean tone, 2 at the end of your signal chain if you want to keep it all relatively level and even. The second is the most likely to "breathe" and "pump" so you'll have to be careful how you set it there, especially when using lots of different effects.
Personally I do not use a compressor - I get the compression I want from my choice in pickups/strings and the appropriate amount of gain. On the other hand... well, you're not me. =)
I would say try it at the beginning of your signal chain first since I think that's the effect you're going for. Putting it at the end is more of a "subtle" thing, and I suspect you want "color".
