HDTV Antenna and coaxial issue?
I am looking to get the Samsung 32" Series 5 LCD HDTV LN32A550
it has one coaxial... i have cable with time warner cable but no cable box.
i am asking if this setup will work.
a coaxial switcher like a (cable splitter) to have the antenna plus my cable cord in the switcher and that hooked up to the tv with the one coaxial.
will i be able to receive the local hd channels that are near plus watch the cable i have now the channels 1 - 100 exmp. mtv, spike, tnt, usa, espn... with this setup work or will i have to switch the cables from the antenna coaxial when i want to watch local hd channels and when i want to watch twc switch to it?
No, don't have a box it comes from the floor and directly to the back of my tv. its not digital cable. that would come with the box, we had that before but not anymore we do have an antenna on top of the house in the back but my room is in the front of the house.
You have basic (or basic+extended) cable - not digital cable, or HD cable.
This will still work with his TV but won't give you ESPN-HD, for instance. To get those cable stations in HD, you'll have to call Time Warner and upgrade to one of their HD cable packages. This will require a cable box.
If your HDTV has a QAM tuner built into it (check your manual) you'll get the local broadcast channels in HD, like NBC-HD, CBS-HD, ABC-HD, PBS-HD, and whatever local channels are broadcasting in digital as well. (remember - while all HD channels are digital, not all digital channels are HD!) You don't need the antenna in this setup as you're already getting those channels on your cable-TV-cable.
Connect the cable-TV-cable to your HDTV, and have it scan for channels. When it's finished, the HD channels will be denoted by .1, .2, .3, and so on. For instance, if NBC is channel 4 for you, then 4.1 will be NBC-HD. In my area, PBS is channel 10, and there are 3 HD PBS stations - 10.1 is the HD version of channel 10, but 10.2 is PBS-Kids, and 10.3 is PBS-Health. These play nothing but programs related to their title (a 24 hour Sesame Street channel...)
