The Best Guitar Pedal Setup?
I've been playing guitar for roughly 7 months and I've made my pedal board this... boss super overdrive, boss ds-1 distortion, boss ml-2 metalcore and a slash wah. I've been getting comments on how weak this setup is and I could tell myself too. What should i remove/add to make this a better setup?
Well, you've got three distortions. Why?
Simplify your signal chain down to what you need. Me, I really like the metalcore, I think its a great pedal. I'm not a fan so much of the ds-1 or sd-2 or whatever it is.
Normally I put my wah after distortion, but lately I've been putting it before... with the solo boost on it gives a nice compressed tone through the distortion pedal and doesn't get super loud... so it works pretty well for me, I'm happy with it... I can go between a generally crunchier tone, or for more of that "lead" tone we all seem to like on the neck pickup.
I have a Boss GT-3 I got from GC used for like 100$. I use it sometimes for my clean effects... get a multifx pedal and screw around with it, experimenting will help you learn what types of sounds you're interested in.
The only thing that matters in the end is if you're happy with your tone and you can get it to do what you want it to do. You don't have a lot of flexibility now... but it's up to you whether you even need the flexibility to do more.
Me, I'd get an EQ pedal and put it after your distortion pedal. That way you can tweak the outgoing sound and either coax a different distorted tone out of it, or use it for a clean solo boost, or whatever. I love EQ, I think its one of the more subtle, useful, and least understood fx a guitarist can use.
