i want a heavy boss pedel (compact). Something very metal.
any ideas?
My favorite distortion pedal from Boss is the Metal Zone... the MT-2 if I remember correctly. But it's only for metal, it won't give you any soft distortion whatsoever. Using that sweet parametric EQ to dial in and out the mids is the key to how it can have such a wide range of metal distortion tones. When I use it, I keep the bass and treble pretty low, and usually cut some mids, depending on my rig and mood... although I'll just as easily boost my mids as well. I've found that bass = mud, so I tend to keep my bass frequencies pretty low, and boost mids instead. Gives a warmer, fuller sound.
Anyhoo, the OD-20 and any of the GT-x pedals will give you a wide range of distorted (and non-distorted for the GT-x) tones... IF you take the time to learn how to use them properly. The GT-x series can take a while to get used to, and longer to dial in that perfect sound, but the hidden treasures and extremely wide range of tones they can offer is truly staggering. My buddy has the OD-20, and it has pretty decent tone... of course, he's running a 7-string with EMG's. =) Can you say beefy?
The Boss DS-1 is a classic, and will give you more of a grunge/Nirvana sound. You can put an EQ pedal in front of it or after it and tweak it to get more metal, but it's not going to get the same heavy tone as a MT-2.
If you are using a pedal to boost the distortion on your amp, then try the DS-1 first. If you're planning on using a pedal through the clean channel of your amp, try the MT-2 or one of the multifx pedals.
They will all sound better through a tube amp. Of course. Keep the levels low on whichever pedal you use to avoid overloading your amp's input, which will create fuzzy messy crappy tone. I strongly suggest keeping your gain below 75% on all of the pedals I've mentioned - gain obscures a note's fundamental and ruins clarity.
If your amp's distortion is *almost* good enough, try getting a GE-7, the Boss EQ pedal. You can tailor your amp's sound (or your distortion pedal's sound!) more to your liking - as I said earlier, bass = mud, so cutting your lowest bass frequencies a bit will really help your clarity. Cut too much and you lose warmth, but sometimes you want that, no?
There are some other distortion pedals out there by Boss and by others... but I don't have enough experience with them to recommend them or not.
Finally, are your pickups high-output? If they aren't, now's a good time to upgrade them. High output pickups will give you a better distorted tone, depending on the pickup and guitar of course. I suggest selecting a pickup with low bass response - your guitar probably has enough bass in it anyways, and again there's that whole bass = mud thing.
