What does a pedal booster do for the guitar player ?
I've been playing for 6 years, and i know, i should understand a lot more, but i haven't used many pedals, and am starting to using them, and i always hear of a booster. What is it really ? what does it do ? thanks.
A bigger signal (more voltage) = more saturation, which means a fuller, richer distorted sound.
Pickups can hit a volt or two peak to peak, but in general the average response is going to between a few tens and a few hundred millivolts, depending on how hot the pickup is. A battery powered pedal can easily boost that up to a few volts - and that means a louder/larger signal hits your amp or distortion pedal, and that means more crunch and saturation.
Well, I should say that that's its use before distortion. When used after distortion its a volume boost, a la a solo boost.
