Bass guitar pedals for metal?
I play bass for a hardcore band, bit of a similar sound to parkway drive. Anyways I'm getting a proper amp (Hartke vx3500) and I'm wondering if it would be worth also investing into some sort of pedal. I've never used a pedal for bass and I'm wondering if they're worth the money and what types would be useful for hardcore music. I've really only heard an overwhelming amount of people say EQ pedals are really good and not much on other pedals. The amp has a 10 band EQ tho so an EQ pedal would probably be a waste. I've heard people say overdrive pedals can be good for hardcore, but not much on the sound they have... I don't wanna sound like a 3rd guitar.
The recommended petals for a bass guitar have always been EQ and Compression and then whatever other effects you require for they type of music you play. I play bass primarily in a studio environment and I recently decided to set myself up with every possible bass sound that you could want because I record for all genres of music. After going out and trying out a lot of bass effects pedals, I decided to settle on the BOSS GT-10B http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OujOub9edwA multieffects pedal because it sounds great and has everything you could want is a pedal except the advanced synth & phaser sounds that I can get by plugging my bass into my Roland Juno-G keyboard workstation. At a cost of around $500, it's also the most cost effective way to go. For instance, if you were to purchase good quality EQ, Compression, and Distortion pedals alone, that would cost you between $300 and $400 right there for only three effects. With the GT-10B you have almost evey effect that BOSS (made by Roland) makes for the bass. So, that is my recommendation for a serious bass player. One brief word about bass amplifiers. You probably do not realize it but there are almost NO bass amplifiers on the market that provide speaker systems capable of adequately reproducing the low E-string on the 4-string bass or the low B-string on the 5-string bass. Why? Because the low E-sting (E1) vibrates at approximately 41.2 Hz. The low B-string (B0) vibrates at approximately 30.86 Hz. So, the speaker system in your amplifier needs to provide a frequency response (not frequency range) of lower than the lowest note (to provide head room or bottom room as the case may be) in order to adequately produce that sound. For instance, if you purchase the Hartke HyDrive HX410, http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HyDriveHX410/ the according to their specs, you would have a Frequency Response: 30Hz to 17kHz which is very adequate for the 4-string bass but only marginally adequate for the 5-string. So, here you are looking at $600 just for the speakers. I finally settled for JBL speakers (in my opinion the sound the best) and I have a pair of 15" (best size for a powerful bass presence) and I also have two additional 400-watt JBL powered subwoofers that have a frequency response down to 28 Hz and when I play my 5-string, you can feel the bass long before you hear it. I have bass players asking me all the time what I use because as they say to me, it's the best live bass sound they have ever heard.
