i bought a marshall jcm 800 and a vintage cab recently. i have a gig coming up and i want to know if there are any good pedals, multi effects pedals, etc for a good distorted tone and many other tones. im looking for that vintage 80's bang ( van halen david roth era) 
i have heard good things about the boss gt 10 and bad reviews on the digital sound of the line 6 pod xt live. do you guys have any expirience in this topic and can you help me out???? remember the jcm 800 has no effects on it what so ever that the basic tones presence, bass, mid, etc. any help????
The JCM800 series should have plenty of nut sack to get the distorted tone you're looking for. Crank that pre amp knob to 10 and get them 12ax7 tubes glowing man,that's where your "distortion' tone is gonna come from,then use your "post" or "master volume" to avoid problems with the neighbors. Basically you'll be driving the heck out of the pre amp (producing distortion) and keeping it at an acceptable volume. If that still doesn't cut it for ya and you still feel you need a pedal in front of it.Maybe "GAIN" is what you need.A good 10 band EQ in front of the amp may pump out the power you need.It will add some "oomph' to your signal,and add or take away to the frequencies you want.Here's a quick list of some distortion pedals that I own..Good and Bad !!
BOSS- Metal Zone- this thing blows IMO. It's a very noisy pedal and I would use a noise gate after it. It does produce that "metal" tone,but that's about it. There is no real "in between" on this. It's either full on metal or a crappy fuzz tone. It is not a true bypass either. It will pop when engaged on,and will suck some tone out of your original signal. Like I said,just my opinion. I guess I'm NOT the only one who has problems with it... let me guess I got a thumbs down for my opinion on a crappy pedal right?...lol..geez...

Ibannez - Tube Screamer(the old school green one). Very versatile pedal. It can give you the coolest creamy blues tone,to full out distortion,and everything in between. It has a true bypass circuit (no "pop" or tone loss) and is fairly quiet as far as stomp boxes go. I suggest you try it out.(the answer above me has got the model # for ya Thumbs up to that answer)
KRANK- Krank Shaft OR Distortus Maximus- The distortus maximus is by far one of the best pedals I've got !! It is true bypass,it can go from a nice overdrive,to crunch,to face melting assault mode !! This bad boy is top notch and extremely versatile. Even driven to insane distortion,it rings each note out quite clearly(no muddy notes here !!!).A little pricey,but you get what you pay for. Since I got this,all other pedal are collecting dust now. I even use it instead of my amps distortion,this very well maybe the one for you. Try it out,if it's too much try the Krank Shaft,it's the less agressive version.Do yourself a favor and getcha pull off of either.Distortus Maximus is brutal when you want it to be !!
DOD- Death Metal pedal- Not bad,but very unresponsive as far as tone control. Again it's "metal" distortion or fuzz. It does scream out the metal tones though.
There are literally hundreds of pedals out there by all kinds of companies,for all kinds of tones.(boss,digitech,MXR (EVH uses them),DOD,Line 6,Hughes&Kettner,Dunlop ect) I've never had any bad luck with LINE6. I actually find their stuff to be pretty good,and the prices are spot on !!
As far as multi effects. You want rack mount gear or floor? Digitech and BOSS make some great "all in one" processors,for floor or rack mount. I own the old BOSS ME-8 and it is awsome for building sounds and live uses. Hit up the web sites and check them out. The Digitech GSP1101 is highly recommended. Hope this points you in the right direction. TRY THEM ALL OUT...seriously...take your time and don't settle.Welcome to the never ending tone quest !!
