What kind of distortion/effects pedal should I get?

Well I pluged up my bass to my friends amp (he plays guitar). It just had distortion on it (like a button you press) & i'm wondering what kind of pedal would do that or just a good pedal for my bass. The amp gave my bass a different sound and bends and harmonics sounded alot better.

They make bass-specific fx pedals that are designed to operate in the frequencies that a bass guitar generates (check out www.musiciansfriend.com for what is available).

At the same time, you can use pretty much any guitar pedal with your bass.

My friend uses a Russian made Electro-Harmonix Big Muff for both his bass and guitar with fantastic results.
