Making external hard drive, hardware choices?
Hi, today is the big dance, the biggest shopping day of the year. The day of all the sales. I've been interested in building my own external hard drive and decided to wait until now to see what kind of deals were out. Around where i live i can get a standard enclosure case for 5 dollars after rebates. It is a usb 2.0 connection, which is what i want. Staples is offering a Maxtor Ultra 200GB ATA Internal Hard Drive for $20. Is this a good drive? it is fast enough for my tastes, 8 mb cache. But i was wondering if this is the drive to go with. I obviously want to get something as cheap as possible. The other option is a SimpleTech SimpleDrive® External USB 2.0 Hard Drive, 250GB from Office Depot for $40. The actual building process i am not worried about, just which is the better choice? Also i assume that with the SimpleTech it is better for plug and play? And lastly, if i were to go with the Maxtor, any 3.5" encloser would be fine, right? the basic one would work? thank you so much!
I'm using that same maxtor hard drive and an I/O magic enclouser.
I happen to work at Staples and that is where i purchased both items.
It took me about 5 minutes to transfer 15gigs of music from my laptop to my newly made external.
