vypyr 30 or spider 4 30?
I was wondering what amp is better. I know people say the vypyr has better sound quality however i think the spider 4 has way more presets. I heard that the vypyr has sanpera ll amp modeler or whatever.
Any suggestions?
I love these answers.
"...That said - NO serious electric guitar player I know of uses a solid state amp..."
BB King uses a solid-state amp. Dimebag Darrell used solid state Randalls until near the end of his life, and on every Pantera recording. The Roland JC-120 is an example of a solid-state guitar amp that has been and is still widely used, and can be heard on many classic recordings. Tech 21, Mosvalve, and Peavey are manufacturers who have also made good quality solid-state amps. And yes, even Marshall has made a number of decent solid-state amps. While the latest, the MG series, is panned by many of the snobbish persuasion, they actually sound quite good if you couple them with good speakers and good pickups. Its worth noting that the Marshall Valvestates were solid-state amps with a starved-plate tube in the preamp that contributed very little to the overall tone.
After owning a 3k$+ rig complete with Mesa Boogie Tremoverb (the higher priced version of the Dual Rectifier), I discovered that I enjoyed the sound and especially lower weight and lower cost of a simpler rig, whether a rackmount tube-preamp/hybrid power amp or a Crate Power Block. Did I sacrifice some tone? Yup. Did I get a sound that was acceptable to me at 1/5th the weight and 1/4th the cost? Yup.
Quite a few of the older, experienced gigging guitarists I know use at least solid-state power amps to get a controlled sound and controlled volume on stage. They get their tone from their signal chain, and count on solid-state reliability and lower weight to get them through their sets and setup/breakdown.
Anyways, sorry to go off on a tangent.
I prefer the Vypyr 30 myself. Once you start playing around with an amp you'll figure out what works for you... presets don't matter for jack, in my opinion, as many of them are a little too exaggerated in order to show off what the amp can do. I have a hard time figuring out how you can get more than a dozen or so presets out of a Line 6 Spyder... they don't have a lot of options or tweakability to their fx like the Vypyr does....
Having owned Line 6 gear in the past and loathed it, after playing a Vypyr a few weeks ago at a Guitar Center, I would not only be happier owning one of those vs a Spyder, but would rather own a Vypyr than the comparable Marshall MG series amp. Might not be very fair, since the lower-priced MG series amps really, really, really blow (the more expensive ones can sound quite nice), but there it is.
Try to play before you buy, okay? Good luck!
