what is an amp emulator? can preamps be used like an amp head?

what is an amp emulator??
and what is a preamp? can i plug in a preamp into a cab w/o a proper amp head?
An "amp emulator" makes your guitar sound like its coming from a given amp, ie a Fender Twin Reverb, or a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.
The technical definition of a preamp is something that takes a small signal (like from your guitar) and makes it bigger, so that the power amp can amplify it and make it big enough to put it through the speakers.
For guitarists, a preamp is generally thought of as what "shapes your tone". An amp head is a combination of a preamp and a power amp.
You need a power amp to power the speakers and make noise. No power amp, no volume. You either need an amp head, or a separate power amp.
